Stephen G. Cobb is Life Member of:
The Florida Association of Criminal Defense lawyers. “Liberty’s last champion.”

Law / Rules
Florida Constitution – the 1968 Florida constitution was substantial modification of the 1885 constitution.

Florida Statutes – this external link to the Florida State Senate has a search function you can search Florida law by year, you can search legislative changes, bills that are filed, and a number of other interesting facts about Florida law.

Florida Criminal Punishment Code Manual (PDF) – the official manual for felony cases. Points are calculated based upon a formula which changes at least once each year. The legislature substantially changed the Code and took the top end off Anyone scorning more than 363 points can get a life sentence – even for something like a felony worthless check or Driving on License Suspended, Cancelled or Revoked.

Florida Attorney General Opinions – certain public official can get advisory opinions, which carry a lot of legal weight.

Municipal Codes in Florida – thousands of city laws you didn’t even know existed From Pensacola to Milton to Destin to Shalimar to Crestview to DeFuniak Springs to Tallahassee, Florida, to…..everywhere/ the list of cities that have their own laws in addition to Florida state law, is just amazing.

Florida Rules of Criminal Procedure (PDF) – procedure is how things get done within the legal system. This is one PDF file we3ll worth the download. This does not include local rules of procedure, which can vary within a single Judicial Circuit: County Court in Shalimar, Florida, will have a different procedure than County Court in Pensacola. For example, Arraignment is called Plea Day in Okaloosa County (whether in Shalimar for south –end cases from Destin, Fort Walton Beach and many Esther or in Crestview, Florida). In Pensacola, Arraignment is called Arraignment, and the last date before trial to change a plea is called Plea Day. In Okaloosa County Court, this date is called Jury Trial Review. Therefore, although this download is an impo9rtant one for Florida Criminal law cases, local rules, from and customs will often apply.

Florida Rules of Juvenile Procedure (PDF) - the rules are different in juvenile because the goals are different. However, local rules still apply. In some Juvenile Courts, the presiding trial judge will still require the juvenile defendant to appear for Arraignment even though the Rule of Procedure allow for a written Waiver of Arraignment.

Florida Rules of Appellate Procedure (PDF) – many of these rules are so iron clad that entire cases fail for lack or compliance with the time limits or other aspects of procedure
.
Florida Evidence Code – cases are won and lost on evidence. Many people think that certain types of evidence cannot come in, when it can (think hearsay, where the exceptions outnumber the prohibitions). Conversely, many people think that specific instances of someone’s bad character always come in – and they don’t.
